A Ventnor town councillor is urging the Isle of Wight Council to adopt a more dog-friendly approach to its beach restrictions.

Councillor Ian Bond believes that the current rules are outdated and deterring both residents and visitors from enjoying the Island’s coastline.

Bond has proposed a motion for the Ventnor Town Council to consider, suggesting that the Island Council review the beach restrictions in line with changes made in Cornwall. In 2020, Cornwall County Council introduced a less restrictive approach to dog access, allowing dogs on beaches outside of peak hours during the summer months. This model has proven popular with residents and visitors alike.

Councillor Bond argues that adopting a similar system on the Isle of Wight would boost tourism and improve the quality of life for local dog owners.

He points to the success of a trial period earlier this year in Ventnor, where the absence of restrictions led to responsible dog ownership and minimal disruption.

The motion will be debated at the next Ventnor Town Council meeting.
