Dog owners on the Isle of Wight are able to walk their dogs on any beach without the risk of a fine, as the legal order previously restricting dog access has lapsed.

The Island Echo reported this surprising news, highlighting the Isle of Wight Council’s failure to renew a crucial Public Space Protection Order (PSPO).

A Summer of Freedom?

Previously, a Seasonal Dog Exclusion Order, enforced through a PSPO, prohibited dogs from specific beaches between May and September. This aimed to create a balance between dog-friendly areas and designated dog-free zones, particularly during peak tourist season.

However, the IW Council has failed to renew the PSPO for the 2024 summer season. This means the beaches previously restricted, like those in Sandown, Ryde, and Shanklin, will be accessible to dogs year-round for the time being and fines will not be enforced. It’s understood this also the same for playgrounds and parks that have dog restrictions.

While this news excites dog owners, concerns regarding potential conflicts with beachgoers, and the environment are understandable.

Responsible Dog Ownership:

An Isle of Wight Council spokesperson acknowledged the lapse and provided some insight into their future plans.

They said: “Renewal work for the Public Space Protection Orders relating to dogs on beaches is underway and will be consulted on in the early autumn. We will in due course be undertaking formal consultation with Town and Parish Councils.

The Isle of Wight Council further emphasised responsible ownership, saying: “Until the new orders are in place, we are asking dog owners to respect the existing signage.

“We would also encourage all dog walkers, regardless of wherever dogs are exercised, to be responsible by keeping their pets under control and making sure they pick up after them.”

By following responsible ownership practices, dog owners can ensure a harmonious summer experience for themselves, their furry companions, and everyone else.

Isle of Wight Council staff will be out and about over the summer period issuing advice and guidance to dog owners where necessary.
