The Isle of Wight Council is seeking public input on plans to renew Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) related to dog control across the Island. These orders aim to protect public spaces and beaches for both residents and visitors.
Residents, businesses, and stakeholders are invited to share their views on whether the current dog control rules should be reintroduced or modified. The council is required to renew these orders every three years and is not proposing any changes at this time.
Key Areas of Consultation
The consultation focuses on various dog control-related issues, including:
- Requiring dog owners to pick up after their pets in public areas.
- Restricting dogs from selected beaches during specific months.
- Requiring dogs to be on a leash in cemeteries.
- Prohibiting dogs from fenced children’s play areas.
Balancing Rights and Responsibilities
Councillor Lora Peacey-Wilcox emphasised that the council aims to strike a balance between responsible dog ownership and the enjoyment of public spaces for all. While the vast majority of dog owners are law-abiding and respectful, PSPOs help establish clear guidelines and expectations.
How to Participate
Residents can participate in the consultation by visiting the Isle of Wight Council’s website. The consultation period runs until Sunday, October 27th.
Next Steps
Following the consultation, the council will review all feedback and make a decision on whether to reintroduce the PSPOs with any necessary modifications. The final decision will be made by the council’s Cabinet in November.
